Q&A with Stephanie Quon, Registered Physiotherapist in Brisbane CBD

Q: Welcome Stephanie! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your professional background?

Stephanie: Absolutely! I hold a Master’s in Physical Therapy from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology. I’m certified in dry needling and have extensive experience across acute care, neurological rehab, and private practice settings. I specialise in tailored, evidence-based treatments designed specifically around each individual’s physical and mental wellness goals.

Q: There are a just a few letters behind your name! Can you explain your professional qualifications in simple terms for us?

Stephanie: Sure! I’ll break it down for you.

BScKin (Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology)
This is an undergraduate degree focuses on human movement, anatomy, biomechanics, exercise science, and injury prevention. A professional with a BScKin has deep knowledge of how the human body moves and functions, making them effective in assessing movement patterns and designing rehabilitation programs.

MScPT (Master of Science in Physical Therapy)
This is a postgraduate degree that qualifies a person as a professional physiotherapist. Graduates have extensive training in injury assessment, diagnosis, and treatment using methods like manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and patient education.

MCPA (Member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association)
This means that I am a member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Members of this association, much like the Australian Physiotherapy Association, are required to maintain professional standards, ongoing education, and adherence to ethical practice guidelines.

Dry Needling Certified
This multi-level certification means that I have specialised training in dry needling – a technique where fine needles are inserted into muscles to relieve tension, reduce pain, and improve mobility. It’s highly effective for treating chronic and acute musculoskeletal conditions and is a valuable addition to my treatment skillset.

Q: What initially inspired your journey into physiotherapy?

Stephanie: Growing up, I was deeply involved in dance and sports, which inevitably meant dealing with my share of injuries. Those personal experiences taught me how crucial proper rehab is – not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. At the age of 13, I began working with children with developmental disabilities as a support worker. Through this role, I fell in love with neurology, science, rehabilitation, accessibility and knew that I wanted a career that allowed me the opportunity to help people of all ages and abilities recover from injuries, maximise their function and live fulfilling lives. From this role, I grew into becoming a skating coach, Behaviour Interventionist and then assistant at a neurological physiotherapy practice during my undergraduate degree. I am incredibly grateful to have such a wonderful career and strive to provide empathetic, compassionate, and evidence-based care to support my clients’ total well-being.

Q: Can you tell us more about your specific areas of expertise and who might benefit most from your treatments?

Stephanie: My practice is diverse, ranging from post-surgical recovery and chronic condition management to enhancing athletic performance. I have particular expertise in manual therapy, exercise prescription, education and dry needling, which collectively helps patients achieve rapid pain relief and lasting functional improvement. Whether you’re an athlete looking to optimise performance, a professional experiencing desk-related injuries, or managing chronic conditions, my approach is comprehensive. I have also supported many clients with chronic pain and provide extensive pain education and evidence-based treatment to assist with re-gaining independence.

Q: Speaking of chronic conditions, many of our clients struggle with recurring pain. How does your approach address this?

Stephanie: The treatment of chronic pain requires a holistic, biopsychosocial approach that goes far beyond the physical symptoms. Typically, chronic pain is characterised by pain that persists greater than 3 months. At that point in the recovery timeline, we typically know that by then, the body is no longer signalling tissue damage, but rather, nervous system central sensitisation. To treat chronic pain, we must understand all of the factors contributing to the person’s experience: biological, psychological, social/environmental and lifestyle.

To gain better understanding, I complete a thorough assessment and devise a patient-centred plan from there. Some of the tools that I may utilise include pain neuroscience education, movement education, exercise programming, graded exposure, manual therapy, dry needling, breathing and relaxation-focused training, mindfulness practices, discussion regarding sleep hygiene and activity pacing. At the centre of this is building a strong client-physiotherapist relationship where I listen without judgement, validate the pain experience, work on setting collaborative goals and provide reassurance through the ups and downs of recovery from chronic pain.

Q: How important is personalised care in your physiotherapy practice?

Stephanie: Personalised care is essential. Each patient has a unique set of physical, emotional, psychological, and lifestyle factors influencing their recovery. At AHF Physiotherapy, we dedicate time to truly understand all aspects of our patients’ lives to provide patient-centred and evidence-based care. Personalisation means you’re not just receiving standard exercises or treatments; instead, you’re benefiting from a fully customised program designed specifically for your body and lifestyle.

Q: Dry needling is becoming increasingly popular. Can you share why you think it’s an effective treatment option?

Stephanie: Dry needling effectively releases muscle tension and improves circulation, which speeds healing and reduces pain quickly. It’s particularly beneficial for managing acute flare-ups and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. It complements hands-on manual therapy and movement re-education beautifully, enhancing overall treatment outcomes and providing immediate symptom relief.

Q: Your website biography mentions working with children and clients with neurological conditions. How does your experience in these areas shape your overall practice?

Stephanie: Working with children, especially those with developmental disabilities like ASD, ADHD, and Down Syndrome, and adults with neurological conditions has deeply enhanced my empathy and communication skills. These experiences taught me patience, adaptability, and the value of building strong, trusting therapeutic relationships – skills I apply with every client I see. Both of these clinical populations often involve significant hands-on neuromuscular facilitation during our assessment and treatment sessions which can be an asset in any area of practice.

Q: Lastly, how does your active lifestyle influence your practice?

Stephanie: Being active myself – enjoying hiking, running, swimming – gives me a real understanding of what my clients aim for in their recovery. I personally know the frustration of being side-lined by injury and the joy of returning stronger. My lifestyle helps me deeply empathise with clients’ goals, frustrations, and triumphs, guiding them effectively back to the activities they love.
